The U15A Red Deer Chiefs are celebrating an exceptional 2024 lacrosse season, marked by a remarkable 21-2-1 record and three major championships.
The Chiefs' journey began with a standout victory at the prestigious Calgary Canada Day Lacrosse Tournament, one of the longest-running tournaments in North America. The team triumphed in the U15A division, earning a title that head coach Darren Kinnear describes as especially meaningful.
“It’s been around for over 40 years, and I played in it as a kid without ever winning,” Kinnear reflected. “For our kids to win it was a huge accomplishment, and being part of that was something really special.”
The Chiefs' momentum continued throughout the league season, where they claimed the U15A Championship title in the Calgary District Lacrosse Association. Competing against eight other teams, they finished with an impressive 10-1-1 record.
To cap off their historic season, the Chiefs clinched the U15A Alberta Lacrosse Association Provincial Championship, defeating the Sherwood Park Titans 7-2 in the final, held in Sylvan Lake.
“The boys played outstanding all year,” Kinnear said. “From February right through to the provincial final, they kept growing. By the time we reached the championship game, they were fully dialed in. It was the culmination of five months of hard work and teamwork. They truly earned that title.”
Kinnear, who took on the head coach role after serving as an assistant in 2023, noted the significant growth of the team, especially with five returning players from the previous season. He credited the team’s leadership group for driving the success, both offensively and defensively.
“The team’s overall drive to improve and win was key,” Kinnear explained. “It’s one thing to want to win, but it’s another to commit to the sacrifices necessary to make it happen. The boys showed immense heart and dedication throughout the season.”
Kinnear also expressed gratitude for the support of the coaching staff, team management, and parents, whose efforts ensured the team’s success.
“I’m incredibly proud of the boys, and I want to thank everyone—coaches, parents, and the community—for their unwavering support. It’s been a tremendous season, and this success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in Red Deer lacrosse.”
